What is this tool?

Lorem ipsum is placeholder copy. The words come from a scrambled passage of Cicero, and they are meant to show a layout without asking the reader to follow a sentence.

This page builds the text from a fixed word list, in order. The same shape and the same count always produce the same text. A sentence is 8 to 12 words. A paragraph is four sentences.

Typical use cases

Filling a card or a column in a mock.
Checking how a layout wraps a long paragraph.
Grabbing a short run of words for a label.

How to use it

Choose words, sentences or paragraphs.
Set how many. The text updates on its own.
Copy it. A share link stores the shape and the count, and the text is built again when the link is opened.

Nothing is uploaded. The word list is in the page.

Common mistakes

The sentences are not grammatical Latin. Words are taken in order from the list and given a capital and a period. Do not quote them as Cicero.

Words stop at 400, sentences at 40, paragraphs at 10. Switching shape clamps the count into that shape’s range.

Asking for the text twice with the same settings returns the same text. There is no random shuffle.

Good to know

Past the end of the list, words start over at lorem. The first word of a result is capitalized. Paragraphs are separated by a blank line.

The share link stores the shape and the count. It does not need to store the text, because the text is computed from those two values.

Did you know?

The source is Cicero’s De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The familiar “lorem ipsum” starts in the middle of the word dolorem, in the phrase “dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet”.

De finibus discusses the ends of goods and evils. The passage this dummy text is cut from is about pain: nobody loves pain itself. The scrambled form is what printers used so a reader would look at the layout instead of the argument.

Frequently asked questions

Does the text leave my browser?: No. It is built on your machine from a list shipped with the page. A share link only puts the shape and the count in the URL fragment.
Why is the text the same every time?: The list is walked from the start. Words, sentences and paragraphs are counted, not drawn at random, so a shared link can rebuild the same block.
Is this real Latin?: The words come from a real Latin book. The sentences on this page are a mechanical cut of that word list, so they are not a translation and not a quotation.
